Where’s Brooklyn at? That’s a question that continuously receives a response no matter who asks it in any part of the world. New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Caribbean… Brooklyn is always representing and on Saturday, March 26th, Brooklyn will be representing Black Women.

In honor of Women’s History Month, SAVAÉ Inc., will host an exhibition in celebration of Black Women. Through art and music, the exhibit will commemorate the lives, achievements and beauty of Black women through the eyes of nine extraordinary female artists (Carla Campbell, Deb Marcano, Florine Demosthene, Happiness Akauiro, Kiini Salaam, LaToya M. Hobbs, Lemia Bodden, Sherley Olopherne and Tamara Figueroa.)

The theme of the exhibition is “What She Longed To Tell…”. It was inspired by Dr. Tricia Rose’s book, “Longing To Tell”. For one evening, spectators will have the opportunity to experience a celebration of Black women in an amazing way. View the art, speak to the artists, listen to the music, watch the performance, enjoy the venue, and see Women of Color in a phenomenal way.

SAVAÉ, Inc. is a grassroots non-profit arts organization dedicated to fostering cultural understanding and awareness through the arts. For this exhibition, SAVAÉ Inc. has teamed up with the non-profit organization, African Voices.

Petula Payne is the founder of SAVAÉ Inc. Earlier this year, as she was in the process of finalizing the details, purpose and vision of this exhibition, she made a profound statement to me which made me want to support the project even more. On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, she said, “I would love your participation in this project. We want to reach out to young Black women who struggle with issues of beauty, self-esteem, men, work, family, children, etc.. I pray that this project is a reflection of everything it means to be a Women of Color.” I was already committed, but her words sealed the deal. I’m proud to be a participant and look forward to showcasing the journey of Women of Color with my fellow artists.
